Emus are large flightless bird endemic to Australia. They are one of two animals featured on the Australian Coat of Arms - they other being the red kangaroo! Emus have special feathers that are made up of a short quill from which two long plumes protrude. These plumes are hair-like and soft, making them more flexible that the feathers of other birds. Emus are generally quiet animals, but they can make deep calls that can be heard more than a mile (1.6km) away. These birds can live just about anywhere there is enough water which is why human-made spaces which provide sources of water for their livestock have granted emus access to area they wouldn't have naturally lived. In the 1930s, this led to a clash between the birds and people in a time now called The Great Emu War. The emus won!
