If I remember correctly I bought this from his merch table at the show I saw him at in Los Angeles, where I was living at the time. Maybe it was the Wiltern, but I'm not sure. I sure feel lucky that I got to see him live a few times while we could. Rest in Poetry, Elliott.) (I guess I'll mention here how I was introduced to his music...So, it must have been 1998, and I was driving down Sunset Blvd. from Los Feliz towards Hollywood, on a sunny day around lunchtime, I remember this so well...and on KLXU (Loyola Marymount's college radio station) I'd heard this song...I forget which one exactly, but I was like, the DJ better say who this is and when they did, I soon thereafter went to find out more about Elliott Smith. Since this was 1998, I forget how much internet was involved in this endeavor, but I recall going to the Tower Records on Sunset a lot at the time, along with other local independent record shops - the names of which elude me at the moment - and yeah. I bought all his albums (on CD) that I could find. I was obsessed. Being a long time Beatles fan/obsessive, I was like, whoa. And of course, when you read interviews with him you find out that Elliott was a massive Beatles fan, as well, and they're one of his main inspirations. So, that was how I became introduced to his music and subsequently began learning to play his songs on guitar or piano, since that's what I do when I love a song/musician. Also, I realize that I could have been introduced to Elliott's music a year or two earlier, when my dad mentioned to me, "I just saw this movie, Good Will Hunting, and I think you'd like it. It reminded me of you." Or something like that. I was living in San Francisco at the time, and my dad was in Los Angeles, and yeah. I'm not sure why I hadn't seen Good Will Hunting at that point, and therefore, didn't get hip to Elliott Smith as early as I could have. I guess it was only a year later that my serendipitous radio station listening choice led me to discovering Elliott Smith, but yeah. It's just nice to know that I have cool dad who has always known me well enough to mention things like this, especially regarding music or art or cultural stuff. He's got excellent taste and I can say that my formative years had me exposed to the best music since my dad was into The Police, Dire Straits, Paul Simon, George Harrison/The Beatles, and I'm forgetting a lot of other great bands, but yeah. Having that kind of early exposure to only the best music was a huge part in me having what I consider thee best taste in music to this day. (And also, having the discriminating taste in music that I have, I will say that I will never be satisfied with my own attempts to make music, but it gives me such pure joy to be able to sort of play the music I love so much. ... So, this is one of the songs I was learning how to play on both guitar and piano when the pandemic started in Spring of 2020...I love this song so much and though much is wrong with my version (pretty sure I transposed it into an easier key to play in, don't do the fancy finger picking or anything) but it is what it is for now until I re-do it. I wish I had more time to play guitar right now, but I don't. This video was my 3rd take and I pretty much make it through the song without any major flubs but I definitely need to learn how to adjust the sound levels because whatever I did to get the vocals to be more "up front" also made the guitar all the more treble-y or something. I don't mind it but, yeah...I need to learn how to record and edit in GarageBand. Anyhoo, I figured out the main riff or whatever chords to Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan when I was like 16 or so, and realize, there's some similarity to that in this song. I haven't played this in over 3 years so I should try to learn it, again.
