In this video, I put the Palfinger knuckle boom crane truck to work on a precision crane job. A construction company called me out to lift a 4,500-pound backup generator over a fence and set it onto a brand-new concrete foundation at a church. Of course, this wasn’t just a matter of picking it up and throwing it somewhere close enough. There wasn’t much room to work with, the fence wasn’t interested in moving, and the generator had to land precisely where it belonged so the electricians could get straight to work. After getting everything rigged, I lifted the generator up and over the fence, eased it down onto the pad, and somehow managed to get it set without turning the new fence into modern art. We wrapped up just as the electricians arrived to start wiring the generator into the church. Once it’s online, the church will have backup power through the upcoming winter months, which seems like a pretty worthwhile use for a ridiculously large truck with a ridiculously long crane attached to it. From there I headed off to another crane job that unfortunately couldn’t be filmed. Apparently not everyone wants a guy with a camera narrating their construction project while making questionable jokes. Weird. After that it was finally back home, where I removed the detachable flatbed from the crane truck, hooked back up to my sliding axle trailer, and got everything switched around and ready for whatever terrible idea tomorrow turns into. That’s one of the things I’m really starting to like about this Palfinger setup. One day it’s hauling equipment, the next day it’s lifting generators over fences, and a few minutes of rearranging things later it’s hooked to a trailer and ready to go haul something completely different.
