Diesel could become ~3X more expensive because of three things that are happening in the world right now... For the past several months, the only reason everyone thought oil prices would go up is because of the Strait of Hormuz closure... but now two other factors have stepped in leading to the oil shock... 1/ Source 2/ Route 3/ Refinery I’ll explain... 1/ Source Deficit The world produces 100 Mn barrels of oil a day, and consumes just the same amount, daily... While the Strait of Hormuz closure should have brought the deficit by 20 Mn barrels a day... We were saved by the Saudi East West pipeline and the UAE pipeline, because of which oil prices went up, but not by so much that the world would come to a standstill... some countries deferred some purchase and production... and the actual deficit was more around 5-6 Mn barrels a day... But now that the Houthis as well as Iran have severely hit the pipelines... the world has literally lost about ~10 Mn barrels per day of export from the Middle East... 2/ Shipping Deficit Now that both the straits around the middle eastern peninsula are shut... ships are traveling all the way around Africa, down to Cape of Good Hope, then back up to Europe, and picking up oil by passing through the Suez Canal... This means, while earlier, a ship would take 19 days to take oil to Asia... now the same ship takes 48 days... So the shipping cost of oil has gone up from $3 per barrel to $26 per barrel... which adds $23 of price per barrel... 3/ Refinery Deficit Crude oil has to be refined to be turned into diesel... And look at what’s happening to the world’s refineries... Russia had 32 large refineries, out of which Ukraine has now destroyed 27... this is in addition to the destroying of the Gulf refineries... And China has now announced a shutting down of its diesel exports...
