Before King Kong became a massive screen-based experience on the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour, guests came face-to-face with a gigantic physical animatronic sitting only a few feet away from the tram. This is the story of the original King Kong Encounter — how Universal built it, how the massive Kong animatronic worked, how the attraction actually moved the Studio Tour tram, and why it became one of the most important attractions in Universal theme park history. King Kong Encounter opened at Universal Studios Hollywood in 1986 and completely changed what the Studio Tour could be. Instead of simply driving past movie sets and demonstrations, Universal placed the tram directly inside a massive New York disaster scene where King Kong was attacking the city around you. The attraction featured a roughly 30-foot-tall King Kong animatronic weighing around 6.5 tons. His head alone stood about 10 feet tall, and the figure featured 29 computerized movements that allowed Kong to move his head, eyebrows, nostrils, mouth and other facial features. As the Studio Tour tram moved through the attraction, riders encountered breaking news reports, a destroyed elevated train, smoke, fire, sparks and even a physical helicopter crash before finally coming face-to-face with Kong. But one of the attraction’s most impressive tricks happened underneath the tram. It looked like King Kong grabbed onto the bridge and physically started throwing the Studio Tour tram from side to side. Except Kong wasn’t actually moving the tram. Universal built the tram bridge on a moving mechanism that could shift underneath the vehicle. Kong’s animation was synchronized with the bridge movement, making it appear as though the giant animatronic was physically shaking an entire loaded Studio Tour tram. It was a simple illusion in concept, but pulling it off required the animatronic, bridge, lighting, sound, fire, helicopter crash and other effects to work together at exactly the right time. Kong himself was also incredibly detailed. His facial movements helped sell the illusion when guests were only a few feet away, and Universal even gave him his infamous banana-scented breath, blasting riders with warm, moist air as the tram passed his face. The attraction became one of the defining experiences of the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour and helped establish the idea of putting guests directly inside a movie scene. In 2010, Kong returned to the Studio Tour with King Kong 360, created with filmmaker Peter Jackson and inspired by his 2005 version of King Kong. Instead of another giant physical animatronic, the new attraction surrounded the Studio Tour tram with enormous screens while motion, sound and physical effects placed guests inside a battle between Kong and dinosaurs. And in 2026, Universal removed the attraction’s 3-D component, meaning guests now experience King Kong 360 without 3-D glasses while the screens and tram motion remain part of the sequence. But the original King Kong Encounter remains one of the best examples of old-school Universal attraction design. A giant animatronic, a moving bridge, a crashing helicopter, practical fire effects and an entire New York street scene all had to operate physically in front of a tram full of guests. And perhaps the smartest part was that Universal never needed King Kong to actually be strong enough to move the tram.
