"The Monitors were one heck of a group. Another instance of finding gold where you didn't realize it had always been. They recorded at Motown pretty much early on but just weren't touched on the shoulder by the Fickle Hand of Fame like their other lable mates. They were a fun group to listen to though, and perhaps because we don't hear them two million times a day on oldies radio, they sound fresh and give us that feeling of discovery like when we were first getting to know all those other Motown artists who hit bigger on the radio. Let's get to know who we're listening to: Lead singer was Richard Street. Sandra Fagin was the incredibly beautiful woman who, like the Miracles' Claudette Rogers, lent a distinctive edge to the harmonies of Warren Harris and Maurice Fagin. Richard Street was one of the great voices at Motown with a style in the range of Ronald Isley of the Isley Brothers and Bobby Smith of the Spinners. He could sing soft and sweet like Smokey or rough and gruff like Dennis Edwards of the Temptations. Here, the group is given an song of tender and very delicate beauty by the team of Roy Nievelt, Robert Walker and Robert Staunton. It sounds a bit like one of those 50's tear-jerkers, but given that impeccable Motown touch, courtesy of the Funk Brothers. The drums have that amazing mid 60's Motown Studios crispness, that very live sound. The piano, strings and everything else is pitched just so, with dramatic swells in intensity at just the right times. Here is another facet of the Robert Walker / Rober Staunton style: the chorus is never stated until the very end. Listening to the work of these men, you get the impression they were not going for the usual formulaic way of writing songs. That's why it's such an interesting study to hear their work; there seemed to not be a direction toward a tried-and-true trademark sound or style. At Motown, it was about writing great songs, but they had to employ well-consturcted choruses that could really drive a song into the listener's conciousness well after the record ended. The Staunton-Walker style didn't always adhere to that. In a way, even though it may have played a role in many of their songs not being released, it also makes their records much more intriguing. "All For Someone" has a fairly commercial sound, but at the same time, with its chorus-at-the-end-only construction, it's almost like a bit of an ironic smirk at what the hit formula was supposed to be about.
