On this episode of Liquid Courage, Joe talks about Utah Governor Spencer Cox’s press conference where he claimed Utah is going to save the Great Salt Lake by the 2034 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. This Governor and previous administrations have refused to properly regulate upstream water diversions and water waste for decades. The result is the collapse of the Great Salt Lake, the largest remaining wetland ecosystem in the American West. The lake is now just a few feet above its 2022 record low, and though Utahns have been pleading for accountability from state government, we continue to get empty promises, hollow policies, and claims that buying our way out of this crisis is our only solution to save the Great Salt Lake. There’s nothing wrong with buying water, but the Governor and the Legislature have been hostile to basic policies that could provide more water to the Great Salt Lake because there is opposition to them. To raise the Great Salt Lake back up to a healthy level by 2034, we would need to restore it in just 8 years and 2 months. That would require delivering an extra 1.2 million acre feet of water to the lake every year for the next 8 years, but outside of existing river flows, Utah has failed to deliver even 100,000 acre feet of additional water to the lake every year since it began trying in 2023. That means we need to send the lake more than twelve times the amount of water we’re currently delivering for each of the next 8 years. We haven’t even reversed the lake’s decline, let alone begun restoring it. As long as our leaders refuse to listen to Utahns and embrace real solutions, we aren’t going to stop the decline of the Great Salt Lake.
