Scientists Develop Ultra-Thin Touch Buttons That Recreate the Feeling of a Real Click Touchscreens are everywhere, but they lack one feature of traditional buttons: the satisfying feeling of a physical click. Now, researchers led by Quang Van Duong have developed an ultra-thin touch button that can produce both vibrations and audible sounds, making virtual buttons feel more realistic. The technology uses a special material called a relaxor ferroelectric polymer (RFP), which changes shape when exposed to an electric field. When a user presses the button, finger pressure helps create a localized electric field that deforms the polymer film, generating vibrations beneath the fingertip. The device uses ribbon-shaped electrodes to control different regions of the film. By changing the frequency of electrical signals, the same structure can produce tactile vibrations at around 50–300 Hz and audible sounds across a much wider frequency range. Unlike conventional systems that rely on bulky vibration motors, this design is thin and flexible. Researchers also report that it can work with capacitive, resistive, and inductive touch sensors. The technology could eventually improve smartphones, vehicle dashboards, home appliances, and industrial control panels by providing clearer feedback without traditional mechanical switches. However, further development is needed to evaluate its durability, power consumption, and commercial practicality. The research, published in *Scientific Reports* in 2019, offers a promising approach to making modern touch interfaces feel more natural and responsive.
