🌙 Welcome to the channel “ Moonlit Fly Fishing! “🌙 October Caddis Fly Tying Tutorial | Backcountry Halo Skater. Learn how to tie the Backcountry Halo October Caddis—a high-floating foam dry fly designed to dead-drift, twitch, skate and wake across the surface. This October Caddis-inspired pattern combines a two-color twisted foam body, mobile SiliLegs, buoyant Halo Hair and a buggy beaver-dubbing thorax. The wide, flattened foam body creates excellent surface contact and flotation, while the contrasting orange and brown foam produces naturally mottled segmentation. Dead-drift it beside banks and overhanging vegetation, twitch it through pocket water, skate it down-and-across or let it wake at the end of the swing. Its buoyant construction also makes it an excellent option for supporting a dry-dropper rig. 🪰 GET THE COMPLETE TYING KIT: https://moonlitflyfishing.com/products/products-backcountry-halo-october-caddis-fly-tying-kit?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=email&_kx= 📖 READ THE FULL ARTICLE: https://moonlitflyfishing.com/blogs/moonlit-fly-fishing/fly-tying-backcountry-halo-october-caddis?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=email&_kx= MATERIALS LIST Hook: Moonlit Premium TOGATTA ML102, sizes 10–12 Thread: Semperfli Classic Waxed Thread 12/0, Burnt Orange Body: Moonlit Zero Gravity 2 mm Foam cut into 1mm × 2mm strips—Orange #10 and Dark Brown #3 Head: Moonlit Zero Gravity 2 mm Foam—Orange #10 Wing: Moonlit Halo Hair—Mahogany Brown Legs: Semperfli Grizzly Flutter SiliLegs—Fluorescent Shrimp Pink and Gold Flake Thorax: Moonlit Beaver Dubbing—Rust Brown TWISTED-FOAM TECHNIQUE CREDIT The twisted-foam technique used in this pattern was developed by Robert Williamson. Robert began twisting thin strips of sheet foam in the mid-1990s and first published the method in his 2002 booklet, “Creative Flies.” He expanded the technique and its history in his 2025 booklet, “Air Bugs & Twisted Foam Flies.” His original twisted-foam hopper led to stoneflies, caddis, damselflies, cicadas and beetles. The Backcountry Halo October Caddis is my interpretation of Robert’s innovative body technique within the Moonlit Backcountry Halo pattern family. How would you fish this pattern—dead-drifted, twitched through pocket water or skated across the current? Let me know in the comments.
