In this video we take a closer look at the historic RNLB Guide of Dunkirk (ON 826) — a lifeboat with an extraordinary story stretching back to the darkest days of the Second World War. Built by Rowhedge Iron Works in Essex in 1940 and funded through the Girl Guides, the vessel was called into service almost immediately and sent straight to Dunkirk as part of Operation Dynamo. During the evacuation she helped ferry Allied troops from the beaches to larger vessels offshore, suffering damage from machine-gun and shell fire in the process. After Dunkirk she went on to serve as an RNLI lifeboat at Cadgwith in Cornwall from 1941 until the station closed in 1963. She was later sold into private ownership and survived remarkably intact, retaining many original fittings. More recently, Guide of Dunkirk has undergone an extensive restoration at Abbey Boat Builder in Reedham, Norfolk, bringing this extraordinary historic vessel back to life. She was relaunched in 2026 and has once again been appearing on the water, including gatherings of surviving Dunkirk Little Ships. It is incredible to think that a boat which survived enemy fire at Dunkirk more than 85 years ago can still be seen and appreciated today. If you enjoy historic boats, the Norfolk Broads, classic vessels and maritime history, please like the video, leave a comment and subscribe for more. Would you have expected a vessel from Dunkirk in 1940 to still be afloat today?
