In this interview from AI Cybersecurity & Resilience Summit 2026, Vince Kellen, chief information officer of the Texas A&M University System, joins Casey Bryan, chief information officer of the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station, to talk with theCUBE Research's Krista Case about how a security-first foundation is turning AI into an engine for scientific discovery. Kellen describes AI as a platform for thought, one that compresses year-long research into days while expanding the surface area of discovery. Bryan unpacks IGNITE, a state-funded GPU computing initiative designed as a shared resource across disciplines. Its use cases range from simulating molecules for materials science to pushing hypersonic research beyond the hard limits of physical experiments. The conversation also touches on how the team protects sensitive and controlled research data without slowing researchers down. Bryan explains how IGNITE inherits layers of federal, state and institutional requirements, including NIST frameworks and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2 readiness, so researchers never have to think about compliance. He outlines four pillars of sovereignty spanning data, infrastructure, models and governance, supported by partners Dell Technologies, AMD and Equinix. Kellen makes the economic case for on-premises AI, noting that running the same science on a neocloud would cost five to 10 times more. He also looks ahead to distributed edge AI across Texas and the growing convergence of quantum computing with AI research. From securing reliable power to embedding security in the very first implementation workshop, Kellen and Bryan offer a practical playbook for university leaders looking to scale AI with confidence.
