What does it actually mean to have purpose at work? And is purpose something we need to find or something that’s already within us? In this episode of Your Career Journey, I’m joined by Jen Margolis to explore two words we hear a lot in conversations about careers, meaning and purpose. Jen’s interest in meaningful work has developed through her own career and life experiences, from social work and studying organisations and systems to positive psychology, coaching and consulting. A significant personal loss in her twenties also prompted her to think much more deeply about how we spend our time and what makes our lives meaningful. What I particularly enjoyed about this conversation is that Jen makes some quite big ideas feel practical. She explains the difference between meaning and purpose, and challenges the idea that our purpose has to be a particular job, career or impressive-sounding mission. Instead, she sees purpose as something much more personal, a core gift that is already within us and can be expressed in many different ways throughout our lives. We explore how you can start uncovering that through your strengths, passions, values and the experiences that have felt most meaningful to you. Jen also shares some practical exercises, including creating a “timeline of meaning”, to help identify the themes that keep appearing throughout your life. But what if your current job doesn't feel particularly meaningful? We talk about that too. Jen explains how job crafting can help us create more meaning within the work we already do, why a shared sense of purpose can make a difference to teams, and the role leaders play in helping people understand how their work contributes to something bigger. We also look at purpose at an organisational level, including the tension that can arise when purpose and profit come into conflict. In this episode we discuss: ✅ What meaning at work actually means and how it differs from purpose ✅ Why purpose can be so difficult to define ✅ Why your purpose isn’t necessarily a job title or career ✅ How strengths, passions and values can provide clues to your purpose ✅ Using a timeline of meaning to identify recurring themes in your life ✅ What purpose-driven organisations can teach us, and where it gets difficult ✅ The tension between organisational purpose and profit ✅ How job crafting can create greater meaning in an imperfect job ✅ How leaders and teams can create a stronger sense of shared purpose If you’ve ever wondered what your purpose is, questioned whether your work is meaningful enough, or felt pressure to find the one career that’s supposed to fulfil you, I think Jen’s perspective offers a much more useful way of looking at it.
