Does paying more actually guarantee safer food? Karnataka food-safety authorities recently carried out a major inspection drive covering 26 three-star and five-star hotels around Bengaluru. Officials reported expired milk, rotten vegetables, meat and other food-safety violations. At one establishment, 32 litres of expired milk were among the items seized, while another had more than 100 kg of expired food articles confiscated. And food-safety scrutiny is expanding beyond hotels. For Ganeshotsav, Maharashtra FDA has introduced stricter rules covering the preparation and distribution of prasad, annadaan and bhandara. Public mandals are being required to follow registration, sourcing and hygiene requirements. In this video I also look at something consumers rarely do — turning products around and actually reading the ingredient list. Some popular hair-oil formulations marketed around ingredients such as coconut, jasmine or almond can contain mineral oil as the dominant ingredient. For example, a current listing for Parachute Advansed Jasmine Gold lists 81% mineral oil and 18% coconut oil. But an important distinction: Mineral oil being the main ingredient does NOT automatically mean the product is unsafe or that it causes hair loss. The real consumer question is whether the front-of-pack impression matches what you expected after reading the complete ingredient list. I also look at biscuits, independent food testing and India’s rapidly growing trade with BRICS economies. The larger lesson is simple: Don’t judge food by the size of the brand. Don’t judge a restaurant by the size of the bill. And don’t judge a product only by the picture on the front. Turn it around. Read what you’re actually buying. #FoodSafety #ConsumerAwareness #FoodLabels
