Tarot cards originated in Renaissance-era Italy as a card game for the elite, but their use for divination emerged later, evolving into a tool for self-reflection and personal growth. Here's a more detailed look at the history of tarot: Early Origins (14th-15th Centuries): Playing cards, including those with allegorical illustrations, reached Europe in the 14th century, likely through the Islamic world. By the mid-15th century, decks with allegorical illustrations, known as "Trionfi" (meaning "triumph"), were added to standard decks of playing cards. These early tarot decks were hand-painted and rare, and no complete sets of these early tarot decks have been found. The Visconti-Sforza tarot deck, created around 1450, is one of the most complete early tarot decks, with 74 cards remaining intact. Early tarot decks were used for card games, and the rules of the games varied across different regions. From Games to Divination (18th Century): In the 18th century, tarot cards began to be associated with divination and occult practices. French occultist Jean-Baptiste Alliette (also known as Etteilla) published the first definitive guide to tarot card reading, laying the foundation for using tarot as a tool for spiritual and personal growth. Antoine Court de Gébelin, a French clergyman, wrote that after seeing a group of women playing cards he had the idea that tarot was not merely a game of cards but was in fact of ancient Egyptian origin, of mystical Qabalistic import, and of deep divine significance. The Rider-Waite-Smith Deck (1909): The Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and commissioned by Arthur Edward Waite, became a landmark in tarot history. This deck is known for its rich symbolism and illustrated Minor Arcana cards, making it the most popular tarot deck of all time. The deck's illustrations have become instantly recognizable and have influenced many subsequent tarot decks. Modern Tarot: Tarot cards continue to be used for both games and divination. They are increasingly used as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth. The tarot community acknowledges Smith's instrumental role in the creation of the deck and calls it the Smith Waite deck, or Rider Waite Smith deck. There are many varieties of tarot decks, each with its own unique style and symbolism.
