Bill Belichick’s second season at North Carolina must demonstrate that the Tar Heels are moving in the right direction. UNC finished 4-8 during Belichick’s college coaching debut in 2025, including four losses in which the Tar Heels were largely noncompetitive. Carolina also produced some of the worst offensive numbers among Power Four programs. Now, the scrutiny surrounding Belichick should focus less on tabloid headlines and more on two areas that directly affect UNC football: the team’s competitiveness and the stability of the program’s foundation. General manager Michael Lombardi remains on paid administrative leave while UNC investigates a human resources complaint reportedly filed by a former football staff member. The university has emphasized that placing Lombardi on leave is standard procedure in a personnel matter and does not reflect a judgment about the merits of the allegations. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, Bill’s son, also is away from the program on an indefinite medical leave for unspecified reasons. There has been significant change on offense, too. After Freddie Kitchens directed one of the Power Four’s least productive offenses in 2025, Belichick hired accomplished 65-year-old coach Bobby Petrino as his new offensive coordinator. Petrino will work with another rebuilt quarterback room led by Billy Edwards Jr., a sixth-year transfer who previously started at Maryland and Wisconsin. Edwards brings experience, production and a history of protecting the football, but Maryland finished only 4-8 during his season as its starting quarterback. Even if UNC improves, its record might not reflect that progress. The Tar Heels face TCU in Dublin, travel to Clemson, Pitt, Duke, UConn and Virginia, and welcome Notre Dame, Miami, Louisville and NC State to Chapel Hill. NC State has defeated UNC five consecutive times and in eight of the teams’ past 10 meetings. For Carolina to reach a bowl game, Petrino and Edwards must maximize a supporting cast featuring wide receiver Jordan Shipp, running backs Demon June and Benjamin Hall and a transfer-heavy tight end room. The defense also must overcome Steve Belichick’s absence while receiving immediate contributions from several newcomers. Could an improved UNC team still finish 4-8? Absolutely. That is what makes Belichick’s second season so important. Carolina must show greater competitiveness, organizational stability and unmistakable signs that this unprecedented experiment has a viable future.
