Michigan historically averaged 16 tornadoes per year. In 2025, that number jumped to 33. And in 2026, the state has already recorded 19 tornadoes before peak season even began. On the Clean Power Hour, Kyle Sinclair of Sinclair Designs & Engineering (SDE) explained why extreme weather is becoming one of the biggest challenges in long-term solar and infrastructure design. Today’s ASCE wind load standards are based on historical weather data collected over the past 20–50 years. But according to Kyle, those assumptions are rapidly becoming outdated. Counties in Michigan that never previously experienced extreme wind events are now seeing wind loads reaching 140 mph. Meanwhile, engineers are still expected to design systems that will survive and perform reliably for the next 50 years. As climate patterns continue to shift, the conversation around resilience, structural engineering, and long-term project durability has never been more important.
