For years, astronomers treated the future collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda as basically inevitable. Andromeda is moving toward us at roughly 110 kilometers per second, and in 2012, Hubble observations appeared to confirm that the two galaxies were on a direct collision course roughly four billion years from now.
