For years, astronomers treated the future collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda as basically inevitable. Andromeda is moving toward us at roughly 110 kilometers per second, and in 2012, Hubble observations appeared to confirm that the two galaxies were on a direct collision course roughly four billion years from now. Then scientists ran the problem again. Instead of relying on one best estimate, a newer team modeled the uncertainties in the positions, velocities, and masses of the galaxies involved across thousands of simulations. The result was very different. Depending on which nearby galaxies are included, the odds of a Milky Way-Andromeda collision can rise to around two-thirds — or fall back toward roughly fifty percent. What looked like a cosmic certainty may actually be a coin flip. And even if the galaxies do collide, the outcome is nothing like the usual apocalypse imagery. Individual stars are extraordinarily unlikely to smash into one another. The real destruction would happen to the galaxies themselves as gravity tears apart their shapes and rebuilds them into something new. This is the story of how one of astronomy’s most famous predictions suddenly became uncertain again.
