Last week was brutal for day traders — and the cause was a single, rare event. On Wednesday the Fed held rates with three members voting for a hike; on Thursday Japan's Ministry of Finance sold US dollars to buy yen; and on Friday the US Treasury joined in — the first coordinated US-Japan yen support since 2011. That drove USD/JPY sharply lower and whipsawed every major, producing bullish engulfing reversals across EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD and NZD/USD. This week I run two passes: a weekly-only overview to help you judge whether last week was you or the markets, then my usual analysis. The US Dollar Index has rejected its breakout and slipped back into range, and my expectation is further USD weakness aside from pullbacks — with USD/JPY intervention an ongoing danger every trader must respect.
