Location: The Sapona Wreck, Bimini, Bahamas Coordinates: Lat 25°39.040ā N, Long 79°17.593āW The Sapona Wreck: Biminiās Concrete Ghost Rising from the turquoise waters just south of Bimini, the Sapona Wreck is one of the most recognizable and fascinating shipwrecks in the Bahamas. Unlike the steel-hulled vessels that dominate maritime history, the S.S. Sapona was built from reinforced concrete during World War I, when steel was in short supply. Although intended to serve as a cargo vessel for the war effort, the ship was not completed until after the war ended, leaving it without a military purpose. (The Islands of The Bahamas) The vesselās story took several unexpected turns. After the war, it was purchased by Miami Beach developer Carl Fisher and used for oil storage and other commercial ventures. In 1924, the ship was acquired by Bruce Bethell, a Bahamian rum runner known as āBiminiās Rum King.ā During the Prohibition era, Bethell anchored the Sapona near Bimini and transformed it into a floating warehouse where liquor was stored before being smuggled into the United States. (The Islands of The Bahamas) The shipās fate was sealed in 1926 when a powerful hurricane drove it onto a shallow reef near South Bimini. Unable to free the vessel, Bethell abandoned it, leaving the massive concrete ship stranded in only about 15 to 17 feet of water. Over time, the Sapona became a permanent fixture of the Bimini seascape. (The Islands of The Bahamas) During World War II, the wreck found a new purpose. The U.S. military used the exposed hull for bombing and target practice exercises. The scars of those training missions are still visible today, with large sections of the vessel shattered and exposed. Local legends also connect the wreck to Flight 19, the famous squadron of torpedo bombers that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle in 1945 after conducting a training mission in the area. (The Islands of The Bahamas) Today, the Sapona is one of Biminiās most popular snorkeling and diving attractions. Its shallow depth allows even novice snorkelers to explore the remains of the ship, while divers can swim among schools of tropical fish that now call the wreck home. Coral, sponges, and marine life have transformed the once-abandoned vessel into an artificial reef teeming with life. Sunlight pours through the skeletal remains of the hull, creating an eerie yet beautiful underwater scene that blends history, mystery, and nature into one unforgettable experience. (The Islands of The Bahamas) For divers visiting Bimini, the Sapona is often the first wreck they see and the last one they forget. Standing partially above the water nearly a century after its grounding, the concrete ghost of the Bahamas remains a powerful reminder of wartime innovation, Prohibition-era smuggling, and the relentless power of the sea. #divng #fish #nature #fishing #fishing #ocean #wildlife
