Although there is a generally accepted saying that no respectable rock record collection is truly respectable without a copy of the Velvet Underground's infinitely legendary debut album, I'll freely admit that in all my 7 years of collecting vinyl I've never owned or even heard it as a whole prior to inheriting it, along with about a hundred other LPs of different genres and musical varieties, from the collection of my relatives down in Toronto at absolutely no charge. (Adding to that, it's a very early Canadian stereo pressing from 1967, in a non-gatefold cover without Andy Warhol's iconic interactive peelable banana on the front, but WITH the upside-down projection of Eric Emerson's torso clearly visible in the Exploding Plastic Inevitable concert photo.) Somewhat coincidentally, I had acquired this record on January 2014, a mere 3 months after the passing of principal band member - and prolific artist in his own right - Lou Reed...though it probably could have been over a month after his passing instead, had I not gotten a cold around Christmas time! Anyways, not having been exposed to any Reed-related material outside of his 70's solo work, this album was a real surprising ear-opener on first listen, with its rather schizophrenic layout of mellow, delightful ballads being next-door neighbours in the tracklisting to catchy, hard-hitting songs about controversial (by 1967 standards) topics like drugs and S&M...and tracks that are just plain dissonant (i.e. the clever poetry workout "The Black Angel's Death Song", and, perhaps most exceedingly, "European Son", an outright cacophonous springboard for noise rock). Within a few months, The Velvet Underground & Nico has really become a new fave, some selections of which I regularly return to, my top pick being the cold, haunting "All Tomorrow's Parties", where Nico's otherworldly yet strange German-accented chantuese voice provides a perfect backdrop for its sorrowful lyrical theme.
