What if we put rocket technology inside a car? On 15 October, Tesla showed its new Roadster doing exactly that. It drove up an upside-down ramp, jumped into the air, flipped, and landed. Reports from the event say nobody was inside the car during the stunts. In this video, I break down the three physics ideas that make it possible. Sticking to an upside-down ramp. Tesla describes a fan-based suction system under the car. The fans pull air out from beneath it, which lowers the pressure below, and the higher pressure above pushes the car onto the surface. That is what lets the car keep its grip even when it is upside down. Jumping into the air. According to Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, the Rocket version of the Roadster has 10 cold-gas thrusters connected to 600 litres of compressed-gas tanks. When the pressurised gas shoots out one way, Newton’s third law pushes the car the other way. With enough thrust, the car lifts off the ground. Tesla says this technology is borrowed from SpaceX. Flipping and landing. Lifting off is one problem, but rotating in the air is another. When a thruster pushes away from the car’s centre, it creates torque, which spins the car. By controlling the thrusters, the car can rotate and adjust its position for landing. The honest part: Tesla’s production target is 2028, the Rocket version is invite-only, and Tesla says it is not approved for public roads. Some reporters have also questioned how practical it is, including how long the tanks take to refill. A successful demo and a road-ready car are very different things. We spent a century teaching cars to drive. Maybe the next century will teach them to fly.
