On a grey afternoon in March 1934, a fifty-year-old man in a wool suit walked down into a dry dock in Portsmouth and looked up at the rusted hull of a battleship left for dead eighteen years earlier at Jutland. He made a decision that would change the outcome of the Second World War. His name was Stanley Vernon Goodall. A fireman’s son from the East End of London, he had risen to become one of the Royal Navy’s finest naval constructors. The Washington Naval Treaty forbade Britain from building new battleships until 1937. With Italy modernising, Germany rearming, and Japan preparing the Yamato class, Britain’s only option was to rebuild the veterans of the Queen Elizabeth class. Warspite was first. When the dockyard stripped her, they found the hidden fractures of Jutland still inside her frames. Goodall insisted on a full reconstruction: new boilers, thicker armour, guns elevated to thirty degrees that could reach beyond the horizon. The cost approached that of a new ship, but she would be ready in three years instead of six. The Grand Old Lady carried his work into every ocean the Royal Navy fought — Narvik, Matapan, Crete, Salerno, Normandy — and earned fourteen battle honours, more than any ship in the history of the service. 00:00 – The man in the dry dock 08:00 – A working-class boy from Poplar 16:00 – The scars of Jutland still hidden 24:00 – Rebuilding the Grand Old Lady 32:00 – Fourteen battle honours If your father or grandfather served in the Royal Navy, on a Queen Elizabeth-class battleship, or anywhere the Grand Old Lady’s guns were heard, leave his name a nd one memory in the comments.
