A pair of glasses that costs about $5 to $8 to manufacture can sell for $250 or more—and the reason has nothing to do with better materials or smarter design. It is because a single company, Essilor Luxottica, has spent 60 years quietly buying up every piece of the eyewear industry until there was no competition left. Worth roughly $165 billion, this empire makes the frames, owns the stores like LensCrafters and Sunglass Hut, runs the second-largest vision insurance provider in America (EyeMed Vision Care, with 43 million members), and controls licensing deals with fashion houses including Prada, Chanel, Versace, Armani, Burberry, and Ray-Ban. 4.4 billion people on Earth need corrective lenses, and for decades almost all of them have paid whatever prices this monopoly decided to charge. But right now, a city in eastern China called Danyang, in Jiangsu Province with fewer than 1 million residents, is changing the math. Danyang produces more than 400 million spectacle lenses per year—50% of every lens made on Earth—and over 100 million pairs of frames annually. Companies like Zenni Optical, founded in 2003, and Warby Parker, founded in 2010, are buying lenses and frames straight from Chinese makers and selling complete prescription glasses online for $3 to $7. Independent lab tests show Danyang lenses match or beat the performance of premium brand-name lenses at 10 to 20 times the cost. Online eyewear sales in the United States have grown from under 3% in 2015 to more than 15% in 2025, cracking open a wall that looked solid for 60 years. The story traces back to Leonardo Del Vecchio, an orphan from Milan who built Luxottica from a small metal-parts workshop in Agordo into the tightest consumer monopoly in history—one that is now being challenged by Chinese manufacturing and the internet at the same time.
