The anterior tibialis is one of the primary muscles responsible for dorsiflexion (pulling your toes/foot up toward your shin). In open chain movements (when your foot is off the ground), that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do. In closed chain dorsiflexion (foot locked in on the ground) it’s a little different. During a squat, lunge, or knees over toes sort of test, your foot stays planted while your tibia moves forward over your foot (You’re not actively pulling your toes toward your face). In some people, the anterior tib can remain more active than necessary during these movements. When that happens, it may contribute to increased stiffness around the ankle and make dorsiflexion feel more restricted. Limited dorsiflexion can be influenced by many different factors, including ankle joint mobility, calf stiffness, injury history, pain, etc. - This is just one variable that often gets overlooked. One thing I like to experiment with is bringing awareness to the front of my shin, palpating the muscle, and seeing if I can reduce unnecessary tension while moving into a squat, lunge, or knees over toes position then integrating that awareness into more dynamic or taxing movements. If you’ve spent months stretching your calves and your ankle mobility still feels limited, it may be worth exploring whether this excessive muscular tension is contributing to the feeling of restriction here. Save for later and share with someone whose ankles always feel limited in a squat.
