An upstairs bathroom shouldn’t announce every flush to the living room below. In this bathroom plumbing rough-in, we’re using cast iron drainage piping below the floor to help reduce noise—and working around massive triple LVL support beams that make the layout anything but simple. Bathroom #2 has a double vanity, toilet, and bathtub. Follow along as Warden and I map out the drain and vent routes, adjust the toilet rough-in to clear the framing, and install the piping in my own new-construction home. You’ll see why planning the bathroom before drilling and connecting pipe can save you from cutting your work back out. I’m Kelton Balka, a fifth-generation master plumber and owner of Tennessee Standard Plumbing in Knoxville, Tennessee. After 18 years in the trade, I’m taking you through how to plumb a whole house—my own house—room by room, with every connection on camera. BATHROOM #2: THE LAYOUT AND THE CHALLENGES The biggest obstacle in this bathroom is the structure underneath it. The triple LVLs separate the fixtures from the routes we need, so we can’t bring the entire bathroom group down in one location. Instead, the toilet and bathtub take one route, while the double vanity drains take another. We start upstairs with fixture locations, then head downstairs to check clearances before drawing the drain, waste, and vent layout on the whiteboard. That planning includes choosing a 10-inch rough-in version of the approved toilet instead of the 12-inch version to shift the drain away from an obstruction. Noise is another major consideration because this bathroom sits directly over the living room. I explain why I chose cast iron for the drainage below this bathroom, then we work through fitting, connecting, and supporting it. If you're used to running PVC, then cast iron piping creates a unique and mentally stimulating challenge. It takes a lot more time to run but the principles are the same, and the quality of the piping is spectacular. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN • How we establish the double vanity’s water and drain stub-out heights for this installation. • Why the framing leads us to use a 10-inch toilet rough-in. • How sketching pipe routes helps us plan bathroom venting before installation. • The distinction between dry venting and wet venting discussed at the whiteboard. • Why the lavatories and the toilet/tub need separate drain routes around the LVLs. • How we maintain 1/4 inch per foot of fall on the vanity drain run. • How pilot holes help locate a route before sending a drain through the floor. • How we work through tight pipe placement, fitting alignment, and glued connections. • How clevis hangers let us adjust the height of the suspended piping. These are the layout decisions for this particular bathroom, with its fixture locations and framing—not a one-layout-fits-every-house drawing. You’ll see the planning, installation decisions, and obstacles that come with residential plumbing. This series is for plumbing apprentices, professional plumbers, people entering the trade, and homeowners or capable DIY viewers who want to understand what goes into the plumbing behind their walls and beneath their floors. I’ve personally helped more than 50 plumbers earn their Tennessee plumbing license. Teaching the reasoning behind the work matters to me just as much as showing the finished installation.
