In May 1942, as more than 75,000 American and Filipino troops surrendered to Japanese forces in the Philippines, one American officer made a decision that would turn him into a legend. Lieutenant Colonel Wendell Fertig, a reserve engineer with no army under his command, refused to surrender and disappeared into the mountains of Mindanao, determined to continue fighting a war everyone else believed was already lost. With no supplies, no radio, and no support from the United States, Fertig began building a resistance movement from scattered Filipino guerrillas, eventually declaring himself a brigadier general to convince local fighters that an American army was returning. What began with roughly 500 poorly equipped men grew into an extraordinary underground military organization, complete with its own government, currency, and intelligence network. But his growing influence attracted Japanese forces, who launched repeated offensives to destroy his guerrillas, forcing Fertig and his men into the mountains, where they faced starvation, isolation, and near-total defeat. Refusing to give up, Fertig transformed his resistance into a massive intelligence operation, helping connect 169 radio stations across the Philippines and providing American commanders with crucial information about Japanese ships, aircraft, and troop movements. By 1945, his guerrilla army had grown to approximately 36,000 fighters, helping liberate Mindanao, capture strategic positions, and allow American forces to advance without costly assaults. Despite his remarkable achievements, Fertig never received the general's rank he had assumed during the occupation. But when he returned to the Philippines years later, thousands remembered him by a far more meaningful title: Tatay, or Father. This is the incredible story of the American officer who refused to surrender, built an army behind enemy lines, and helped liberate an island the United States had already written off. - As images and footage of actual events are not always available, Dark Docs sometimes utilizes similar historical images and footage for dramatic effect.
