You know you don’t want the relationship back. So why do you still miss them? It can be one of the most confusing parts of separation. Something funny happens and you instinctively think, I must tell them. You hear something they would have laughed at, or even find yourself remembering the toothpaste top being left off or the loo seat left up. Missing somebody can start to feel like evidence: Does this mean I still love them? Have I made a mistake? Am I not moving on? But missing someone and wanting the relationship back are not necessarily the same thing. In this video, I look at what we may actually be missing after a relationship ends — including familiarity, being known, the ordinary rhythm of life together and the future we once expected to have. I also explore why having good memories doesn’t invalidate the reasons a relationship ended, and why moving forward doesn’t have to mean eventually feeling absolutely nothing. This is something I explore in When We Becomes Me: A Psychotherapist’s Guide to the Beginning, the Messy Middle, and the Other Side of Divorce. Missing is a feeling. Going back is a decision. They are not the same thing.
