A semi hauling our military Cat D7F dozer gets hung up on a country road, and we head out with a John Deere 710J backhoe to rescue it. We get the truck moving, he gets stuck again, and then our own backhoe starts smoking on the trip home! This 710J had only been at the shop for about 15 minutes before we started getting it ready for a recovery job. With our semi still out delivering equipment, Clinton drives the roughly 26,000 pound backhoe 22 miles to the scene while Kevin follows with the service truck and chains. The loaded truck and trailer weigh an estimated 90,000 pounds, but this giant Deere has plenty of pulling power. Getting the driver backed out and pointed in the right direction turns out to be another challenge entirely. Just when we think the adventure is over, the backhoe’s rear axle gets hot, starts smoking, and leaks oil. A suspected dragging parking brake means our recovery machine now needs a recovery of its own—and there’s likely a rear axle teardown in its future. Back at the shop, we also compare the massive 710J with a smaller Deere backhoe so you can see just how much bigger this machine really is. Was $1,500 a fair bill for getting this truck out twice and losing the better part of a workday? Let us know in the comments!
