This “DrumReduxCinema”version of “ReggaeFi Peach” by Linton Kwesi Johnson combines new drum tracks (I went with a Bonham inspired backbeat as opposed to the original groove, which is a "one drop”) and a quasi documentary-ish cinematic approach to create a new sonic and visual perspective on one of the most important political works in British reggae and dub poetry. My remix does not intend to alter the original message, merely to offer my interpretation (in this medium) of this story as told through LKJ’s artistry. This work functions as a memorial and a documentary-style tribute to Blair Peach. Peach was struck on the head and subsequently died which was later to be revealed at the hands of the Special Patrol Group of the Metropolitan Police. This fatal assault made Peach’s death a lasting symbol of state violence, institutional injustice and anti-racist resistance in Britain. I chose to use a more driving backbeat groove to propel the music in a more forceful way but still leaving space for the music to breath. The cinematic approach is intended to emphasize the atmosphere of the time and historical resonance of Peach’s death as continuing subject of remembrance and social conscience. This version is offered as a tribute to Blair Peach and to all those who struggled with, and those that still struggle and fight against racism, fascism, and political repression. It honors the enduring power of Linton Kwesi Johnson’s work as both artistic expression and historical testimony.
