Barcelona, Spain is facing a major flood emergency as torrential rain and severe flash floods hammer Catalonia, turning roads into rivers, submerging vehicles and flooding homes across the region. Granollers, Vallès Oriental, Maresme, Malgrat de Mar and communities across metropolitan Barcelona have suffered some of the strongest impacts, with emergency rescues, flooded infrastructure and widespread transportation disruption. Granollers became one of the hardest-hit areas after another violent burst of rain overwhelmed streets and underpasses. Around 98 mm was recorded by late morning, including roughly 50 mm in only half an hour. Firefighters rescued people trapped inside vehicles, railway tracks flooded, a passenger train was evacuated and Granollers Hospital was affected as water rapidly spread through vulnerable parts of the city. Maresme, north of Barcelona, has also suffered severe flooding as swollen streams, torrential rain and rising water inundated roads and disrupted the R1 coastal railway. Tordera recorded one of the confirmed deaths after a wall collapsed, while emergency crews continued searching for a missing man in Pineda de Mar as renewed storms threatened communities already saturated by extreme rainfall. Malgrat de Mar was battered by exceptional rainfall, with nearly 200 mm recorded and around 58 mm falling in only 30 minutes. Floodwater inundated streets and entered the Hotel Silhouette, reaching its dining room, kitchen, laundry, pool area and bar. Around 600 guests were relocated, while flooding also forced disruptions at a local healthcare center and secondary school. Barcelona and its metropolitan area suffered extensive flood damage and major infrastructure problems. Homes and vehicles were flooded around Bellvitge, L’Hospitalet and Cornellà, while roads and Metro services faced disruption. Neighborhoods near Collserola were hit by landslides, mud, stones and water affecting streets and properties, while Barcelona’s beaches lost significant amounts of sand and accumulated storm debris. The scale of the Catalonia flood emergency has been enormous. By 10 a.m. Monday, Catalonia’s 112 emergency service had received 8,914 calls concerning 6,595 rainfall-related incidents. Two deaths were confirmed in Barcelona province and another person remained missing, while flooded roads, damaged railways, submerged vehicles, closed schools and emergency rescues highlighted the widespread impact across northeastern Spain. The danger remains as renewed thunderstorms strike already saturated areas around Barcelona, Vallès Oriental and Maresme. Civil Protection issued emergency alerts across multiple Catalan districts, warning residents about torrential rainfall and the risk of overflowing streams. Authorities urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, rivers, ravines, basements and low-lying areas, and to move upstairs if floodwater enters buildings.
