The switch from CGI to traditional anime could have a huge impact on RWBY's fight scenes, but we can't write them off until we see THIS fight happen! Watch the EXTENDED Version here: https://youtu.be/vdjFdFJptUU Some people are saying Ice Queendom is great while a LOT of others are writing it off as as disappointment. From MY point of view we won't be able to say for sure until we get a very specific type of fight scene. What's my point of view? Well I can speak from a unique place of experience here that's very similar to the path Monty Oum took. You see, I may be a fight choreographer now, but back before programs like Poser and Maya existed I was typing out 3D fight scenes in CODE. If I wanted to create this dodecahedron I'd have to type a whole matrix of calculations. If I wanted it to have a wooden texture I'd have to type a novella of code. No wire frame, just math and render times of up to 24 hours for a single frame of CGI animation. I discovered what 3D fight scenes are great at and it's the very thing traditional animation is weak at. Traditional animation is GREAT at taking single hits and making them look phenomenal! Like the new anime did when it remade this Weiss fight scene. To illustrate what traditional animation is weak at and what we have yet to see in RWBY Ice Queendom, let's analyze the anime fight scenes from the top 10 anime tv shows of 1998. Cowboy Bebop S1E1 has an anime fight scene that trounces everything else released in 1998. The level of passion it shows for fight scenes is at a level reminiscent of Monty Oum's RWBY fights. All of the things that are anime's weak points are what won the hearts of fans when we saw the original RWBY series, from the RWBY trailers to Volume 1 and Volume 2. What I discovered creating my own CGI fight scenes in POV-Ray was that those are the things that are 3D animation's STRONG points! You can focus on creating cool martial arts choreography and combos with almost a complete disregard for how you're going to show it. You can EASILY move the camera and lights to different locations to find the coolest angles from which to film the RWBY fight scenes. Since the fight choreography is already created as one long sequence, instead of cutting you can focus on finding ways to move the camera to SHOW it as one take if you want. All of this experimentation would cost a fortune in traditional animation as seen in RWBY Ice Queendom. You'd have to redraw every frame of the RWBY anime fight just to see what the choreography would look like from the other side. Cheap and easy for Monty Oum to do in Poser, allowing him to focus on his advanced fights choreography. Making RWBY Volume 9 an anime means cheap and easy for epic-looking single strikes, but time consuming and EXPENSIVE for Yang's style of fighting. Yang's close range, intricate back and forth fights with long combos of a variety of moves can't be done cheaply. The producers either have to shell out the money required to stay true to Monty Oum's style of fight choreography or resolve to disappoint fans. There is NO option to hide behind one or two big, flashy moves. When will we know for sure if the RWBY anime will do justice to the level of passion and detail of the original series? We've seen Yang fight a monster and that fight went from 21 moves down to 1 move. But for all we know they compressed the fight due to time restraints in the RWBY Ice Queendom episode 3. Everyone was fighting a monster at some point anyway, so big deal. We'll know for sure when we see Yang fight, not a monster, but another person. That's when they won't be able to find a cheap way out or hide behind big, flashy moves. Something like RWBY's Yang vs the Malachite Twins fight will be when the anime shows that it's either willing to pay the extra money to deliver Monty Oum's style of intricate choreography or it isn't. Yang is the key. Yang is the character who will leave them with nowhere to hide. Are they going to use the anime to find a new audience that doesn't care about the original style of action as much as we do, or are the using the anime to reinvigorate the series, to recapture the imaginations and hearts of us original fans? Some people have already written the show off, but the truth is that the answers to those questions are still locked away, and to get the answers, Yang is the key. *************************** If you wanna help me stay awake to make more videos, consider getting me a coffee!
