š āDonāt die, Roland.ā ā famous last words⦠well, maybe not quite! In this short Vyond history animation, we take a humorous look at Roland of the Breton March and the ill-fated rear guard of Charlemagneās army during the famous Battle of Roncevaux Pass. As Charlemagne and his forces were returning toward Francia through the Pyrenees, the rear of the army was attacked by Basque forces at Roncevaux Pass. Among those killed was Roland, a military commander associated with Charlemagne and traditionally described as his nephew. Also among the fallen were figures such as Eggihard and Anselm. The historical event itself was significant, but Rolandās death became far more famous than the original battle. Centuries later, Roland was transformed into one of the great legendary heroes of medieval European literature, most famously through the 11th-century French epic poem La Chanson de Roland (The Song of Roland). The poem dramatically expands and fictionalizes the events surrounding the Battle of Roncevaux, turning Roland into a legendary knight and portraying Charlemagneās campaign in a much more heroic and epic fashion. This animation focuses on the historical Roland and the somewhat unfortunate assignment of commanding the rear of the entourageāwith a little Vyond-style humor added along the way. š š A quick historical note: The Battle of Roncevaux Pass is generally dated to 778 AD, rather than 788 AD. The contemporary historical sources give us considerably less information about Roland than the later medieval legends do, which is one reason the distinction between the historical Roland and the legendary Roland is so interesting. š¬ About this video: This is a short, humorous historical animation created in Vyond by The Learning Method.
