A remake of a classic Disney favorite, Moana is reborn with visually breathtaking scenes like never before. Ten years after the release of the original film, Dwayne Johnson is back to make more unforgettable magic that made the first movie so special. Set on Motunui, an ancient Polynesian island, the story follows Moana (Catherine Laga’aia), the steadfast daughter of a village-chief, who is chosen by the ocean to return the stolen heart of the goddess of nature, Te Fiti. When her island begins to die, Moana and her clueless chicken, Heihei, set sail to find Maui (Dwayne Johnson), a shapeshifting demigod, in hopes to save her island. On their journey they fight against Kakamora, coconut pirates who also seek the heart, Tamatoa (Jemaine Clement), a giant coconut crab who steals Maui’s fish hook and who lies deep in Lalotai, the Realm of Monsters, and finally, Te Kā, a volcanic demon, whose darkness is destroying her island. Moana is an amazing remake of the original animated film. This live-action version captures the vibrant Polynesian culture as beautifully as the original film did, with detailed clothing and traditional rituals. Dwayne Johnson, as Maui, brings the film back to life a decade after its original release, with his signature charisma, swagger, and confidence. Catherine Laga’aia’s portrayal of Moana embraces her Hawaiian heritage through her heartfelt acting, stunning vocal performance, and lively dancing. The animals in the film, like Heihei, the chicken, and Pua, Moana’s pig, look very realistic and normal alongside the human characters. As always, Lin-Manuel-Miranda’s music is phenomenal, featuring the same hits from the original movie like “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome” sung by Dwayne Johnson. The film’s message is about the importance of digging through your past and your origins in order to discover your true identity and where you belong. It also shows the importance of honoring your ancestors and connecting with your heritage. In the film, not going beyond the reef, represents the glass ceilings that people face in society, and shows the importance of seeing how far you might go. I give Moana 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 12.
