https://kinsmanchurch.com/ Romans 12 - A LIVING SACRIFICE Having traced Paul's argument through eleven chapters, we now move into the section of Romans that looks like works; but as we've seen repeatedly, salvation is not of works and cannot be earned. Rather, salvation produces works through various means: the Holy Spirit bearing fruit, our status as sons and joint heirs, the means of grace, and Christian community. None of these determine salvation. A key principle undergirds this section: God's sovereignty doesn't bypass our decisions; it works through them. The farmer who plants and waters is really farming, even though God gives the growth. Scripture never treats divine sovereignty and human decisions as competitors. Joseph's brothers meant evil; God meant those same decisions for good (Genesis 50:20). Peter charged his hearers with murdering Jesus; an act carried out by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God (Acts 2:23). Full sovereignty and full culpability sit together in a single sentence. Philippians 2:12–13 makes the same point: work out your own salvation, for it is God who works in you. God's working is given as the reason for human effort, not a threat to it. The lesson then addressed a common objection to eternal security; the "once saved, always saved, so live however you like" line. This is a caricature (from the Italian caricare, to load or exaggerate) and a strawman: a distorted version of the doctrine attacked in place of what is actually taught. Paul lays the strongest foundation for eternal security (Romans 8:1, 8:30; 1 Peter 1:3–5; John 6:39; Romans 8:38–39); yet his conclusion is not licence but Romans 12:1: present your bodies a living sacrifice. Grace is the driver of holiness. The very fact Paul must repeatedly answer the accusation of promoting sin (Romans 6:1–2, 6:15) suggests he really was preaching free, sovereign grace. The assurances give absolute confidence; the warning passages (Hebrews 12:14; John 15; Matthew 24:13) keep us vigilant; together they produce humble dependence. It is not either/or but both/and. Romans 12:2 gives two commands: be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. True change begins inside, through the Word, prayer, and the Spirit. The chapter then flows into humility, love in action, and — strikingly — love toward enemies, closing with the cornerstone: overcome evil with good. Which is harder — to die for Christ in one heroic moment, or to live for Him every ordinary day? Only the person who has settled verse 1 can live out verse 21. In the words of The Isaac Watts Hymn, Love so amazing demands my soul, my life, my all.
