(19 Apr 1998) Mandarin/Nat The Chinese dissident Wang Dan, a leader of the 1989 Tiananmen Square pro- democracy protests, was released from prison on Sunday after almost seven years. The U-S has welcomed the move as a positive step forward, although human rights groups have called on the Chinese authorities to free more prisoners. On the streets of the Chinese capital Beijing, some people were optimistic that Wang's freedom might signal a positive change in government policy towards dissidents. But others were reluctant to answer questions about political prisoners for fear of government reprisals - even nine years after the tragic events of 1989. Tiananmen Square today is a far cry from the days in 1989 when hundreds were injured by tanks brought in by the government to crush the student protests led by Wang Dan and others. The Monument to the People's Heroes, which was the centrepoint of the protests, is now sealed off. But elsewhere in the Square on Sunday, Beijing residents and visitors were relaxing in the Square, flying kites on a warm spring day. Some of them remembered the protests vividly, like this man, who served as a medic and helped protestors who were injured by the government troops. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "At that time (1989 protests) I was a member of a rescue team, a health rescue team. I was on the Square until the morning of June 4." SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop (Man in his thirties) He welcomed the news of Wang Dan's release and said it is high time the government improved its reputation overseas. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "I think it is a good thing, absolutely a good thing. I think it is not necessary for the government to give the outside world a bad image, just for one individual or other things, for the individuals like Wang Dan and Fang Lizhi (Chinese dissident physicist who went in exile to the United States)." SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop (young woman on Square flying kite) At Beijing University, where many of the 1989 protests were organised, students are still reluctant to talk about those like Wang who were connected to the tragic events of that year. SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop (young male student) Chinese official media reported the release on Sunday - but only in English, not in Chinese, so many people in Beijing had not yet heard the news. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Student: "Of course I remember Wang Dan." Reporter: "Do you know he was released today?" Student: "I do not know. I have a meeting today and I have to go there. I'm not very clear about this."
