To this question, we may receive various answers, ranging from “the man who celebrates the sacraments” to “someone who does not get married.” Now, even though these answers may be true to a certain extent, they all fail to capture the basic essence of a priest. You see a priest is one who mediates between God and man; someone who offers a sacrifice to God on behalf of man. And seen from this perspective, we realise that in Christianity, we actually have only one Priest, i.e., Christ the Son of the Living God. St. Paul in his first letter to Timothy says, “we have one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” The inspired author of the Letter to the Hebrews sheds further light on this when he refers to Christ as the great High Priest who has entered into Heaven, to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. And what sacrifice does Christ the High Priest offer God on our behalf? The sacrifice of His own self which He began by saying, “This is My Body which will be given up for you,” and, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Alright, but what about those men who dress in fancy clothes and celebrate Mass in the Church? Well, in order to answer that, we must ask ourselves another question: Can the priesthood of Christ ever come to an end? And the biblical answer is “no.” The Letter to the Hebrews, in fact, refers to Christ as the priest forever. Well, in that case, how do we see and experience Christ as the priest forever while we are on earth? And the answer is “through those men who dress in fancy clothes and celebrate Mass in the Church!” In other words, we call these men priests only because they participate in the one priesthood of Christ in a special way. Through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, they represent Christ our High Priest for us. St. Thomas Aquinas explains this clearly when he says, “Christ is the source of all priesthood: the priest of the old law was a figure of Christ, and the priest of the new law acts in the person of Christ.” My dear brothers and sisters, this is how our Lord wanted to make His Eternal Priesthood visible to us on earth. And so we need to remind ourselves that each time we participate in the Holy Mass, we are witnessing Christ offering the sacrifice of Himself to God on our behalf. Each time we go for Confession, we need to remind ourselves that it is Christ Himself who is forgiving our sins. My dear brothers and sisters, to be a priest means to be another Christ. And this calls for an intimate union for these men, who are sinners like you and me, with our Crucified Lord. It’s not at all an easy task. In fact, in today’s Gospel, we see St. Peter himself rebuking our Lord when he heard that the Christ must suffer death, that too right after receiving a solemn blessing that made him the first Pope. If simply hearing about the Crucified Christ is difficult, how much more so will be uniting oneself to Him? And so, today let us pray for the Catholic Priests all over the world, that through the intercession of St. John Marie Vianney, they may experience an outpouring of God’s grace to make visible to us the Eternal Priesthood of Christ through their ministry and their holy lives. #dominicanmediamission #DOMINICANFRIARSINDIA
