Meet Kaleb, Nihiera, Anna, and Ashley. This is Their Story. This documentary provides an unflinching look at the lives of four young adults aging out of foster care as they navigate the difficult transition to adulthood. It sheds light on the multifaceted challenges these young people face as they access services and resources, pursue education, and strive to build stable, healthy futures after aging out. We witness their efforts to pursue education, despite a lack of stability and traditional support and the lasting impact of trauma. The film also highlights the reality of self-medicating with substances, as these young people cope with their pasts. At the heart of these young people’s journeys is the search for connection and safety. We see them navigating tumultuous relationships, often with a deep desire for belonging, only to face the risk of repeating unhealthy cycles. The documentary also dives into the experiences of young parents who, having been raised in the system themselves, now fight to regain custody of their children while confronting the very same barriers they once faced. Ultimately, the film paints a powerful portrait of not only hardship, but resiliency and the search for stability. It calls on us as a society to reflect on the systems in place, the need for compassionate support, and the urgent changes required to ensure that every foster youth has the opportunity to thrive as they transition into adulthood.
