There is a list at Harvard that you will never see. If your family's name is on it, your chance of admission goes from 3% to 33%. It's called the Dean's Interest List — and it has been running since 1922. In 1922, Harvard's president had a problem: too many Jewish students were getting in on their exam scores. So the university replaced its exam-based system with something it called "holistic admissions" — character ratings, legacy preferences, and interviews designed to create a space where judgment could be steered. The Jewish quotas ended decades ago. The system didn't. Today, 43% of white students admitted to Harvard are legacies, athletes, or relatives of donors. For Black students, that number is under 16%. Not because Black families don't value Harvard — because they weren't allowed through the door until the 1960s. White families have had a century of legacy compounding. Black families have had two generations. In 2023, the Supreme Court struck down race-conscious admissions. It said nothing about legacy preference. The tool that was closing the gap is gone. The tool that built the gap is still running.
