Los Alamos is built on the ash of that eruption. This film asks one question: what if Valles Caldera did it again, on a Saturday morning in October, during Mass Ascension at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta? 6:58 AM. In Valle Grande, a park ranger livestreams spooked elk and a line of steam along the tree line. At 7:20 the ring fracture opens. On the Balloon Fiesta field, 42 miles south, hundreds of balloons are already in the air, and a column of ash climbs over the northern horizon. In Los Alamos, a police officer leads the evacuation down NM 502 while the flow pours over the mesa. Above the Rio Grande, a balloon pilot drops his basket into the south wind, carrying a young couple and a ring that was meant for a very different morning. By eight it is dusk. By ten, the ash cloud covers the American West. No narrator, no explanation. Only the cameras that were there. A hypothetical scenario. Valles Caldera is real and monitored by the USGS, and there is no sign it is about to erupt; the people and the events are fiction. Facts from the USGS (two caldera eruptions, 1.61 and 1.25 million years ago), the National Park Service (Bandelier geology) and NWS Albuquerque (Balloon Fiesta weather).
