UPDATE: Corsair fled the Consumer RAM market lol OpenAI employees allegedly going plain-clothes'd to brick-and-mortar retailers to buy out any DDR5 kits 32GB+ per DIMM I was *THIS* close to buying a 128GB DDR5 RAM kit in August - Decided against the upgrade since I was looking to go all in on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell for that sweet sweet 96GB VRAM (Yes, I somehow would need over 1/2 of that at minimum to resolve my bottlenecks, thank you NVIDIA for the wonderful Driver support...), and would've gone the full 256GB AM5 route in that case I was aware prices were spiking in September, but I was moving and there were videos to finish, bills to pay - Better days. October made me realize RAM was going through another one of it's 4 year super(expensive) cycles, but was just happy the cause wasn't something dumb like a single factory fire this time. So what if RAM doubled, quadrupled, it's still a fraction of the build I'd be buying someday soon... Then they came for the LPDDR5 smartphone RAM. Then rumours of pure-play DRAM brands failing to secure any meaningful amount of DDR5 for not just the rest of 2025, but also 2026 at minimum. RAM packagers reaching out to customers and begging them to resell their units back at a PROFIT even, just so they could fulfill supply contracts with more important customers. Warranties expecting RMAs to take 'til 2027 DDR5 Fabs retooling their non-overlapping process steps to reallocate production to HBM You see - everyone is blaming OpenAI for all this, and while they are to blame for the timing and lack of time to prepare, they only caused the inevitable to occur early. You see, the Big 3 Memory manufacturers; SK Hynix, Samsung, Micron - All 3 did what every other Oligopoly in Canada does - above board price fixing. Raising prices in lockstep, coincidentally cutting CapEx roughly in proportion to their market positions, all that was done to be done with the perpetual Boom-Bust cycles Memory is made for. From the 1998 Asian Financial Crisis to today, many a memory bust have caused competitors to go bust. They've been concentrated enough to collude before, but thanks to more modern innovations in high brow banditry, they like all the others finally figured it out. Just in time for the first truly-blank-cheque customers to come knocking. Like I said, OpenAI and all the other AI Labs are to blame as well, and I doubt the 3 Memory makers wanted nor enjoy the extreme market they've made, but even if the AI industry collapsed tomorrow, the structural undersupply imbedded in their capacity will not change. Global demand for Memory, HBM's higher margins, etc. all combine to make availability in traditional memory products a thing of the past. Seriously, the NAND market is toast until 2030, even worse than DDR5 likely is. HBM uses DDR5 as an input, and since it's 3D, that means each new generation uses exponentially more DDR supply ahead of any other in the chain. And because of how Memory sunk its teeth into every facet of technology, the... RAMifications :-) of this will reverberate throughout the consumer electronics industry. TVs, Appliances, IoT devices, Cameras, Phones, Video Games, Laptops, Desktops, Cars - All these compete for what supply was already making a slow-motion-shortage. Take 40% off the top, and panic-buying to inefficiently distribute future supply locked into 2027 now, and I think we may be staring down the barrel of a Technological Winter of sorts. Not as a species - the Hyperscalers and such will continue to grow and innovate - but for most of us, I see technology stagnating until Memory becomes available again in at least a few years. What little is left will do like the Memory makers, going towards the highest margin goods with the least marginal price sensitivity, leaving only the Premium top-end of goods on offer (and yet still scarce in supply) If you're the type of person who buys a cheap phone, a Smart TV, shops on Black Friday or Cyber Monday -- if you plan on making any big purchases like these in the next few years, I'd get a jump on that now while this supply shock works it's way through the system. By next spring, you'll know that I mean. Just hope you heed while the heeding's good! --- 0:00 - intro 1:13 - RAM-pocalypse | OpenAI, SK Hynix, Samsung & RAMmageddon 10:28 - How RAM Shortages become Technology Shortages | Average Joe impacts 18:22 - 2026 HOME INVASION CRIME WAVE TARGETING GAMERS --- **JOIN THE NETLOSS DISCORD!** https://discord.gg/d84k3R8bZK --- Become a Mini-Medici by joining as a Channel Member! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXANChP_NMPxsTvf5fliiBg/join
