In August 1590 a man came ashore on an island off the coast of North Carolina looking for his daughter and his granddaughter. His name was John White. He was a painter, a cartographer, and the governor of the colony he had left there three years earlier. He found the settlement empty. The houses taken apart, not burned. And on a post at the entrance, cleanly carved, a single word: CROATOAN. That word was not a mystery to him. It was the name of an island fifty miles to the south and the name of the people who lived there — the only allied people the colony had. It was, precisely, the message they had agreed to leave. White never reached Croatoan. And for four centuries the story was told as a supernatural riddle, when what is actually there is a simple answer nobody wanted to read. WHAT YOU WILL FIND OUT • Why John White's watercolours are the best record of a world about to vanish — and what Theodor de Bry did to them when he turned them into engravings • Who Manteo and Wanchese were, two Algonquians taken to London in 1584, and why they came home with opposite conclusions • That the first colony was not a colony at all: it was a garrison, run by an officer trained in the English war in Ireland • What Thomas Harriot observed and could not explain: that people died only in the villages the English had entered • What happened at Aquascogoc over a silver cup, and what Ralph Lane decided in June 1586 • That from 1587 to 1589 that region lived through the worst drought in eight hundred years, read in the rings of bald cypress • That Jamestown fell inside the other great drought of the millennium — and what that says about why one colony survived and the other did not • What has been dug up at Site X and on Hatteras, and why it points exactly where the post was pointing 📚 SOURCES • John White — watercolours and voyage narratives (1585-1590). Originals in the British Museum, digitised. • Thomas Harriot — A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia (1588). • Theodor de Bry — illustrated edition of Harriot's report (Frankfurt, 1590), engraved from White's watercolours. • Ralph Lane — report on the colony of 1585-1586. • Richard Hakluyt — The Principall Navigations, which preserves the voyage accounts. • Dendrochronology: the bald cypress study reconstructing the droughts of 1587-1589 and 1606-1612. • Archaeology: the work at the site known as Site X (since 2012) and the excavations on Hatteras Island, the old Croatoan. On what became of the colonists: there is no direct documentary proof. The documentary states which hypothesis explains all the evidence without inventing anything, and which do not. ⚠️ WARNING This documentary deals with historical events of war and colonisation, including the killing of an indigenous chief in an ambush. No graphic violence is shown. Scenes recreated with artificial intelligence from historical sources. No image in this video is a documentary record of the period.
