China is covering its lakes, reservoirs and coastal waters in solar panels, and the reason has almost nothing to do with the panels themselves. In Anhui province there is a lake that nobody dug. It appeared because the ground fell in. For decades coal was mined out from underneath that land, and eventually the surface collapsed into the space left behind. Water filled the hole. Farmland became a lake. Useless ground. Too wet to farm, too unstable to build on. Today it holds a power station. Tens of thousands of solar panels floating on plastic pontoons, generating electricity on top of the void left by the fuel they replace. That is not a coincidence, and it is not poetry. It is the clearest example of why China puts solar panels on water instead of land. THE REAL PROBLEM IS NOT SUNLIGHT. IT IS SPACE. Sunlight arrives at the ground at a fixed rate, and no engineering changes that. So a large amount of solar power requires a large amount of surface. Utility scale solar needs square kilometres. Now look at where China's electricity demand actually is: the eastern coastal provinces, the Yangtze and Pearl River deltas, where the population and the factories are. And look at where the empty, sun-drenched land is: the western deserts of Xinjiang, Qinghai and Inner Mongolia, thousands of kilometres away. China built enormous solar farms out west. But that generation depends entirely on ultra high voltage transmission lines running across the country, and when the eastern grid cannot absorb midday output, that power is curtailed and thrown away. Building closer to demand runs into a wall. Eastern China has no spare land. What it does have is protected farmland, defended by policy in a country that treats food security very seriously. So the eastern grid needs power, and the eastern ground is full. Which leaves the water. WHAT THIS DOCUMENTARY COVERS Why solar's real constraint is surface area, not technology Why China's electricity demand and its best sunlight are on opposite sides of the country Curtailment: why western solar power sometimes gets thrown away Why panels floating on water run cooler and produce more than identical panels on land How floating arrays reduce evaporation from reservoirs, and why that counts as a second product The engineering: HDPE pontoons, mooring systems that hold against wind load while allowing water levels to rise and fall, and sealing electrical equipment that sits permanently over water Why floating solar costs more per unit of capacity and still wins in land-constrained regions Why pairing floating solar with hydroelectric reservoirs is the smartest version of this idea The ecological questions nobody can answer yet about shading a lake at scale THE PART THAT USUALLY GETS LEFT OUT Nobody knows what covering a body of water does to it over decades. Shading a lake reduces the light reaching the water, which changes photosynthesis, oxygen levels, temperature and the way the lake separates into layers through the seasons. In some cases that suppresses algal blooms, which is a benefit. In others it harms fish populations. Large scale floating solar is roughly a decade old. Ecological effects play out over far longer than that. The honest position is that the experiment is running at full scale while the study is still in progress, and that matters most on reservoirs that supply drinking water.
