Impact investing deployed $1.16 trillion with zero systemic impact, says Peta Milan, whose family office dropped ESG for regenerative investing after the data refused to move. This is TBLI Radical Truth with Robert Rubinstein. Milan runs what she believes is the only family office in the world investing exclusively on a regenerative methodology, and she got there by adding up numbers nobody puts side by side. A trillion in impact capital. Nine trillion in family office assets. One and a half trillion a year in national economic development spending. Then she looked at the outcome data and found nothing moving. Her conclusion was that the industry has been asking the wrong question. Capital efficiency is what finance is trained to measure. Effectiveness is not. Peta Milan is Australian and first generation. She sits on the advisory board of the World Sustainable Development Forum, joined a UN working group on the future of capital, and worked with a group studying radicalisation alongside national security agencies. Her family office also runs a professional certification in regenerative practice. WHAT'S COVERED - A trillion dollars of impact capital and no measurable systemic movement, which is where the whole argument starts - Why she treats regenerative as a methodology rather than an asset class, sector or label - Research her family commissioned: a roughly 70% failure rate across conventional and impact approaches, against 60% success for regenerative - Of more than a thousand self-described regenerative projects, about 2% were actually using the methodology - The difference between a system and a structure, and why most "systems change" work is neither - Portfolio design where each asset strengthens the others, instead of diversification spreading the risk - Why there is nothing listed and no fund she considers genuinely regenerative yet - Insurers withdrawing from acts of God cover, and what that does to every asset behind them - A ten billion dollar wastewater plant, a multigenerational indigenous conflict, and 18 months to resolve it - The next generation wealth transfer, and the trust gap between the people holding the money and the people inheriting it CHAPTERS 00:00 Three appointments in 2017 that changed the question 03:03 A trillion in impact capital and nothing moving in the data 04:00 Commissioning the study: a thousand projects, four dimensions 04:55 A 70% failure rate, returns included 05:54 Only 2% were actually working with the methodology 06:20 Restoration is not regeneration 07:42 Almost nothing genuinely regenerative to invest in 10:04 Non-extractive by design, and higher returns anyway 12:38 Why families rather than institutions 15:09 The risk conversation economists are not having 17:20 Why nothing listed qualifies yet 18:39 Everyone is using the word. Does it bother her? 22:28 The Rocky Mountains cross five states 24:29 A system is not a structure 28:52 Boom, bust, and why that is not a viable model 31:36 Insurers withdrawing from acts of God 32:32 What a regenerative portfolio actually looks like 37:09 Do you accept below market returns? No. 39:56 The global south is more interested, because it hurts more 40:53 The wealth transfer, and the trust gap 48:01 Vienna, and why housing is not a housing problem 51:42 Meaning, purpose and belonging, from deradicalisation research 54:44 Vancouver: a wastewater plant done regeneratively 57:34 New York, the watershed, and the farmers ▶ Subscribe for a new Radical Truth conversation every week: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDBhRVM93uUnAAtqOMIz_yg?sub_confirmation=1 RELATED EPISODES - B.
