About eleven years later she was alone in it, with a second bedroom and a second bathroom she was keeping closed because there was no reason to open them. A friend who talked often about wanting a tiny home gave her the push to start looking. She found the right one through Southern Idaho Tiny Homes already finished and sitting at the fairgrounds in Twin Falls. Then she went to work with the city of Hailey planning and zoning department to find out what putting a tiny home on her existing lot would require. The list was specific: R-17 insulation, hurricane straps, snow-load-rated construction, the right building materials. Most tiny homes she loved didn't qualify. This one did. She and the city worked through the permit process together. It was the first time they had done it. She moved in December 2023. She found tenants for the main house. The rent covers that house. The living room does not feel small. Vaulted ceilings run the full length. When she went looking for seating she measured the space, found RV recliners that fit exactly, and ordered them online. The kitchen island is granite, the cabinets are soft-close, the fridge is full-size. No dishwasher, but she does not miss it. The bathroom is large enough to move around in comfortably with a wheelchair, with a full-size shower and the washer and dryer directly next to it. The bedroom is on the ground floor with a queen bed. The loft is for storage and guests. The windows face the mountains. She still has the original house. Her tenant lives there. Christy lives in the tiny home behind it and says after two and a half years she still has everything she needs and nothing she doesn't. HER ADVICE "If you can have your washer and dryer right next to your shower, when you go to take a shower all you got to do is throw your clothes right in the washing machine. No hamper needed. If you have a house with some land or just some land and you're interested in looking into tiny homes, you should just reach out to your county or city. Talk to them. They're helpful. They understand what you can and can't do and you can start talking with them right from the beginning of the process so you don't go down any paths that won't lead you to success. The possibilities are endless really."
