Professor Abigail Hackett (Sheffield Hallam University, UK) gave a guest lecture in February 2024 when visiting Children of the Anthropocene -research group in University of Helsinki, Finland. Her lecture was titled: Towards a posthuman view of voice, participation and coproduction in relation to sustainable futures with children. Professor Hackett is introduced by Dr. Riikka Hohti. Abstract: This presentation describes fieldwork and insights emerging from Voices of the Future, a three-year, multi-site project based in the UK, which aims to investigate the opportunities and dis/benefits of treescapes through participatory research with children and young people. My part of this research has focused on playing and making in and with treescapes, with children aged under 5 years and their grown ups. The research received significant cross-disciplinary research funding from UK Research Councils, in a context of increasingly urgent calls for ‘solutions’ to climate collapse (preferably ones that do not involve the west compromising their lifestyle or the economics of growth), with an emphasis on time as ‘running out.’ The paper interrogates what it looks like to do coproduced participatory research about sustainable futures with young children and families and some of the tensions and contradictions that this kind of work might bring into sharper relief. In relation to childhood and climate change, there is an ongoing tendency to romanticise the relationship between children and nature (Giorza, 2021; Nxumalo and Ross, 2019) together with what Sheldon (2016) has described as “the slide from the child who needs saving to the child who saves.” Thinking with my fieldwork with children and trees, I explore the potential of fractured forms of ‘off task’ storytelling and non-representational modes of responding to and with place to enact alternative possibilities for human / planetary relations.
