📘 New from Burnout Society We’ve released our first long-form ebook: *The Years Drag Racing Burned*. A 51-page sourced PDF on the deadliest era of nitro-class drag racing, the drivers who burned, and the safety rules that arrived too late. Get it here: https://burnoutsociety.gumroad.com/l/mnxvj On December 1, 1963, Wendell Scott crossed the finish line at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Florida, after driving one of the greatest underdog races in NASCAR history. He had started deep in the field, fought through a cold and rough dirt track, and beat names like Buck Baker, Richard Petty, Ned Jarrett, Joe Weatherly, and David Pearson. But when the race ended, Scott was not brought to victory lane. Another driver was handed the trophy, the photos were taken, and the crowd left before the real winner was officially recognized. This is the story of Wendell Scott, the first Black driver to win a race at NASCAR’s top level, and the long road that led him there. From Danville, Virginia, to moonshine running, second-hand race cars, recap tires, threats, family-built engines, and a sport that refused to fully accept him, Scott kept showing up every week with almost nothing and still proved he belonged. His Jacksonville win was not just a racing result — it became one of the most painful and important moments in American stock car history. For decades, Wendell Scott’s family fought to keep his legacy alive and to make sure the sport remembered what happened that night. The record showed he had won, but the trophy and the proper recognition were missing for 58 years. In 2021, NASCAR finally presented his family with a commemorative trophy, honoring the win he earned back in 1963. This is not just a story about racing. It is a story about pride, injustice, patience, and a man who knew the truth even when the world took too long to admit it. #WendellScott #NASCARHistory #RacingHistory #StockCarRacing #ClassicNASCAR #MotorsportHistory #BlackHistory #NASCAR #VintageRacing #BurnoutSociety
