So what are quantum computers even for? We burn roughly 2% of all the energy humanity uses making ammonia for fertilizer through the Haber-Bosch process, and bacteria in ordinary dirt run the same chemistry for free at room temperature. Nobody has ever copied them, and that's one of the reasons quantum computing exists. This video covers what these machines are for, why the one you're picturing is wrong, and why the biggest countries on Earth are racing to build one that still can't do anything useful. It starts in 1943, with about 200 women whose job title was literally "computer," working out artillery firing tables by hand at 20 to 40 hours per trajectory. The Army paid for ENIAC to do that one narrow job, and it finished in 30 seconds what took a person 20 hours. It filled a room, cost a fortune and broke constantly, and nobody in that room could have predicted the phone in your pocket. A quantum computer today fits that same description. The Department of Energy calls the first reliable ones "novel scientific instruments," and the DOE's quantum lead, Dr. Tanner Crowder, put quantum computing at its "ENIAC moment" at Quantum USA 2026. The narrow job is chemistry. Ordinary computers choke on modeling how electrons sit inside a molecule, and a quantum computer is built to copy the molecule instead of describing it. That covers the fertilizer problem (an enzyme called nitrogenase that nobody has fully modeled), the battery problem behind why your phone dies at 4pm and what an electric car costs, catalysts, and drug discovery, where a drug is a shape that fits against another shape. The video also covers quantum sensing, the half of the field that's already commercial, from the atomic clocks behind the blue dot on your map to a sensor that picks up a single neuron firing. Then the question the whole field turns on: if no quantum computer has done a job anybody needed done yet, why is every serious government spending like this? Because of Peter Shor's 1994 algorithm, which breaks the public-key encryption that lets two strangers agree on a secret over an open wire. Traffic can be collected now and opened later, the harvest now, decrypt later problem, and American codebreakers did exactly that with Soviet cables in the Venona project, collecting from 1943 and working them until the project closed in 1980. The fix is further along than most people think: over 65% of human traffic to Cloudflare already uses post-quantum cryptography, so let your browser update itself, move anything long-lived onto Signal or iMessage, and put a hardware key on your email.
