Set You Free was their debut single and features the vocals of Kelly Llorenna, a fellow college student who was just a teenager when she recorded it. Built around a euphoric piano riff, a driving rave beat and Llorenna's soaring vocal, it became one of the defining anthems of the 1990s UK dance scene and the record that put Clubland on the map. The track had one of the most unusual chart journeys of the era. Recorded at Revolution Studios in Cheadle Hulme in 1992, it first appeared as a white-label 12" pressing of just 500 copies before N-Trance signed to All Around the World. Its official 1993 release stalled at number 82, and a 1994 re-release lifted it to number 39 — their first Top 40 hit. It was the third re-release, in January 1995, that finally broke through: it entered at number 6, climbed to number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, was certified Platinum after selling over 600,000 copies, and finished as one of the biggest-selling singles of the year. It also reached number 11 in Australia. A 2001 trance remix by DJ Rob Searle returned it to the Top 10 at number 4. The song was inspired by a night O'Toole spent at Manchester's legendary Hacienda nightclub in 1989 — where he felt a stranger's heartbeat through her top, an image that became the opening lines. The lyrics were famously written in around 20 minutes. The thunderstorm effects that open the track were originally added to mask the surface crackle of well-played vinyl. The music video, directed by Steve Price, was filmed in the UK and features fireworks and scenes shot in front of Clifford's Tower in York.
