A reactive dog is usually not an aggressive dog. She is an over attached dog carrying too much excitement, and nobody has shown her how to come down. My son Andre brought me this Staffordshire Terrier for leash reactivity. Two weeks later she is off leash inside my whole pack. In this episode of Life at the Ranch I show you the dog psychology behind that: how to read a tail, how to claim your space, and why the human has to change before the dog can. Then the season's newborn tortoises arrive and I introduce them to the pack. Same lesson. Before anything new comes into your home, a dog, a tortoise or a baby, the pack has to be peaceful, calm and in surrender. What you will learn: Why excited and surrendering at once is what attracts other dogs The two second window after her tail goes up, and how to use it The three levels of surrender: belly, side and back When play stops being play, and why you step in Inviting versus invading Why your leash and your fence already make your home a dog psychology center Remember, we don't just train dogs; we train people and rehabilitate dogs. What Andre really rehabilitated here was not a behavior. It was confusion. When did you spot her tail change around Ice? Tell me in the comments, I read them.
