Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu chaired a state cabinet meeting in which the government took a key decision on BC (Backward Classes) reservations in local body elections. Based on the report submitted by the Rajiv Ranjan Commission, the cabinet finalized reservations across eight categories of local bodies, including Gram Panchayat ward members, Sarpanches, MPTCs, MPPs, ZPTCs, Zilla Parishad Chairpersons, municipal ward members, municipal chairpersons, and mayors. Following the cabinet meeting, ministers Atchannaidu, Dola Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, and Satyakumar Yadav announced the reservation details during a press conference. The government has allocated reservations for BCs ranging from 23.08% to 35.02% across different local body categories. The overall average BC reservation in local bodies is expected to be 28.18%, in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines and the commission's recommendations. The ministers stated that the coalition government aims to ensure social justice and adequate political representation for BC communities in Andhra Pradesh. They recalled that N. T. Rama Rao introduced 20% reservations for BCs in 1987 and Chandrababu Naidu increased them to 34% in 1995. They alleged that the previous YSRCP government reduced the quota to 24%, resulting in BC communities losing approximately 17,000 local body positions. The ministers also clarified that coalition partners would provide political opportunities to BC candidates in more than 34% of seats at the party level, wherever legally permissible. Reservations for SCs and STs have also been allocated in accordance with constitutional provisions based on the 2011 Census. The coalition government has stated that it is ready to conduct local body elections as soon as the State Election Commission issues the official notification.
